Region Lazio

Internship

Lazio is a region of central Italy, bordered by Tuscany, Umbria, and Marche to the north, Abruzzo and Molise to the east, Campania to the south, and the Tyrrenian Sea to the west. The region covers an area of 17,201 sq.km (about 6,644 sq.mi) and has a population of 5,896,693 (the second most populated in Italy). The regional capital is Rome, also the capital of Italy. The regional innovation system is strong especially with regard to its public components – universities, national research institutes and the government. The main weakness is the relatively low level of private R&D investments. Lazio is the administrative centre of Italy. The business sector is less important than in most of the other central and northern Italian regions and is very much oriented towards services.. In 2015, Lazio was the Italian region that was more oriented towards services: about 85% of its value added (at current market prices) is related to services, of which 39% to financial and insurance, real estate, professional, scientific and technical activities. In 2017, the regional GDP was equal to €193,101.37m, contributing to 11% of national GDP (Eurostat, 2019). GPD PPS per capita was equal to €33,200 in 2017, above the Italian and the EU average, even though, from 2008 to 2017, the regional GDP per capita has increased by 0.42%. Lazio is the forth Italian region in terms of GDP per capita (following Veneto) (Eurostat, 2019). However, in the last three years (2014-2017) the GDP PPS per capita increased by 2% (Eurostat, 2019). In 2018, the employment rate was higher (60.9%) than at the national level (58.5%) and still increasing (between 2016 and 2017 +1%), although still below the European level (68.6%) (Eurostat, 2019).
