Located in the North of Portugal, Guimarães is an average size city, but with a booming cultural life. Its historic town centre is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, in recognition for being an “exceptionally well-preserved and authentic example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern town” in Europe. Guimarães has a significant historical importance due to the role it played in the foundation of Portugal. The city is often referred to as the “birthplace of the Portuguese nationality” or “the cradle city” (Cidade Berço in Portuguese). Guimarães is also part of one of the most industrialised regions in the country, the Ave Valley.

The city of Porto is one of the most vibrant cities in Portugal. Full of history, traditions, good music and rich in gastronomy. Tthe streets are filled with small traders and the Douro River brings a certain romanticism to the city.

In addition to the wealth of opportunities on offer, this region invests heavily in the vocational and personal training of its workers. Thus, we have a lively, modern, proactive and multifaceted industry. I would add the friendliness of the people, the goodness of the climate and the natural beauty of the landscapes without forgetting the magnificent gastronomy. We have everything that can motivate someone for an Erasmus+ experience with us! The weight of young people - almost 20% of the population - should be highlighted, a figure higher than the national average (15.5%), accompanied by a much lower demographic ageing than in the rest of the Northern region and the continent.

The manufacturing industry employs about half of the active population, with footwear predominating, in Felgueiras, textiles, in Lousada, wood and furniture, in Paços de Ferreira and Paredes, and granite mining, in Penafiel. Castelo de Paiva shows a logic of development similar to areas of rural predominance. Located just over 20 km from Porto, the Sousa Valley has always played a major role in the occupation and organisation of the territory, being located in the heart of a triangle classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, comprising Porto, Guimarães and the Douro Valley. The Sousa Valley is endowed with good level accessibility. Besides one of the main urban train lines, the region is served by motorways that connect it to the South and North. The international airport Francisco Sá Carneiro is also about 20 minutes away from each municipality.

O sector agrícola é também significativo, sobretudo graças à produção de banana, flores e vinho. A atividade industrial na ilha também tem vindo a desenvolver-se graças a uma séria de pequenas indústrias que produzem artigos para consumo principalmente local. Registou-se também um investimento na zona franca, pelo que é possível lá encontrar várias empresas estrangeiras que vieram estabelecer-se na Região.

Guimarães is the Portugal cradle city. Here Portugal was born as an independent country by the hands os our first King D. Afonso Henriques. Is a small town in the North os Portugal. An historical city, UNESCO World Heritage city. Its a very cosy city. Has an importante cluster of textile and shoes industries amoung others. So it could be very intereting for students of areas related to electronics, mechanics, industrial design, marketing, amoung other technical areas. Guimarães is near from Oporto, the second city os Portugal and has a train station with connections to Oporto and Lisbon and Spain. The Internacional Aeroport Francisco Sá Carneiro is 30 minutes away.
