The Czech Republic

Did you know...? The Czech Republic is almost entirely surrounded by mountains.

It is common to greet each other by a firm handshake. Further, steady eye contact is a sign for a serious interest in what the other person has to say. Czech businesses and companies can be characterised as very formal and traditional. Therefore, personal relations take time to develop. That also has an impact on the small talk that is very brief and superficial. Common topics are the weather, or Czech culture. Most Czechs can speak English and/or Russian, especially younger people are fluent in English.

To address a Czech person correctly, you should use the surname until being invited to use the first name or other forms of address. At work, it is important to address your colleagues and employers with their job or academic titles. Therefore, they could be addressed as ‘Mr Engineer’, ‘Ms Magister’ etc.

The communication is subtle and respectful. It is important to pay attention to what the others have to say as well as passing critique should happen in a vey polite way. In Czech companies, punctuality is taken very seriously. It is quite common that Czech workers do overtime, since a good workplace and job are a sign of hard work and effort.
