Estonia

Did you know...? Almost half of Estonia is covered in forests.

It is common to greet each other with a firm handshake. As many Estonians are communicating straight forward and are very business-oriented, small talk does not play a central role within professional situations.

Most Estonian companies and businesses are quite traditionally organised. Therefore, you should start addressing your co-workers by their surnames and wait until they invite you to use their first names. Physical contact is avoided as often as possible. But eye contact is a polite and respectful way to show your interest. Also, the workplace is not the place for strong emotions and loud voices. To pass critique you should be respectful and straight forward.

Since good jobs are hard to find, many Estonians are motivated to work as much as required. Overtimes and long working days are essential parts of Estonian working life. In many Estonian companies, the working day includes an hour for lunch. Punctuality is very important and shows respect not only for your co-workers but also for your job.
