Hungary

Did you know...? Hungarian is part of the Finno-Ugrian language family and thought to be one of the most difficult languages in the world to learn.

It is common to greet each other by a firm handshake and steady eye contact over the entire conversation. The first meeting is rather reserved. Superficial small talk can break the ice. After a certain time the conversations might become more personal and can include stories or jokes to lighten up the communication. Many Hungarians are rather passionate when talking. That also includes loud conversations about the families and private matters.

Hungarian companies are often traditionally structured. To communicate at work, it is important to stay respectful and polite. To address your colleagues you should start using their surnames until being invited to use their first names. As Hungarian companies still have a hierarchical structure, you should apply your own behaviour to your colleagues in matters of break times, chatting and other informal actions.

Many Hungarians are dedicated to their jobs and are therefore very punctual and willing to do overtime work. If you want to make a good impression you should be on time, too.
