Ireland

Did you know...? Dublin is known for having one pub for every 100 people.

At the first meeting you normally shake hands, after that you stay distanced. The greeting also includes the question “How do you do?” or “How are you?” that do not have to be answered properly. You normally answer “I’m fine, thanks” and return the question. After that follows small talk, it is impolite to directly start talking about business. You better start with a neutral topic like the weather, the weekend or sports.

It is common to address people by their first names, unless they are remarkably older than you or on a very high position such as a doctor, judge etc. Everybody tries to be on time, but being too late for less than 15 minutes is manageable. It is likely that there are tea breaks and a lunch break.

Irish are very polite and would never pass criticism openly. Even a manager would never criticise you on a direct way or in front of your co-workers. Irish use a very subtle and ironic humour to lighten up serious situations, sometimes even at cost of other people present.

Hierarchies are present, but not much practiced in everyday life. For example, it is quite common that your manager will introduce him- or herself with the first name and will do some small talk with you etc.
