Latvia

Did you know...? Latvia has one of the fastest internet connections in the world.

It is common to greet each other with a firm handshake. As many Latvians are communicating straight forward and are very business-oriented, small talk does not play a central role within professional situations. The first impression is very important and you should appear interested, respectful, and polite.

Many Latvian companies and businesses are traditionally organised. Therefore, you should start addressing your co-workers by their surnames and wait until they offer you their first names. Physical contact is avoided as often as possible. But eye contact is a polite and respectful way to show your interest. The workplace is not the place for strong emotions and loud voices. Work is where formal things are discussed. To pass critique you should be respectful and straight forward.

As good jobs are hard to find, many Latvians are motivated to work as much as required. Overtimes and long working days are essential parts of Latvian working life.

Punctuality is important and shows respect not only for your co-workers but also for your job.
