Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

Did you know...? The Macedonian Ohrid Lake is the oldest and one of the deepest lakes in Europe.

It is common to greet each other by a firm handshake and eye contact. Body language and physical contact are very important to show each other’s appreciation and respect. Small talk is possible, but rather short and superficial. You might end up talking a lot about your home country and your family, since many Macedonians are very interested in foreigners. Although Macedonians talk loudly, it is impolite and unprofessional to be very noisy at work. It is common to address each other by surnames. Later, you might be invited to address your colleagues by first names.

Although many Macedonians work very hard and a lot, they value their leisure time with family and friends. Punctuality is polite and useful for work, but due to unsteady timetables for public transportation etc. it is likely to be a couple minutes too late for work.
