Republic of Malta

Did you know...? Malta was a British colony until 1964.

It is common to greet each other by a firm handshake. Small talk is a good way to start first conversations and to become better acquainted with each other. It is quite common to start addressing people with their last name, but it is very likely that they will invite you to address them with their first name.

Since many Maltese are bilingual, their English is very good and they will easily chat with you. Further, they are known for their strong sense of humour and irony which makes maybe communication a bit more difficult, but also enjoyable for you.

Due to the heat over the summer, many small companies are having long lunch breaks over noon. Consequently, your working days can be longer than in your home country. You should inform yourself about the duration of the working days in your company.

Trust and honesty play important roles in Maltese companies. Therefore, you should be polite and honest about problems and critique. Also, you should appear reliable and independent in your tasks. Punctuality helps leaving a good impression, but you should not be surprise if your co-workers are a couple minutes too late or a meeting starts a few moments later.
